History beckons for either Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez or Caleb Plant this weekend, as the two battle to become boxing’s first-ever undisputed super-middleweight champion.

Rising from Guadalarja, Canelo learned to fight simply because he had to growing up in Mexico. Since turning professional at the age of 15, he has become the face of boxing today and currently reigns as the pound-for-pound number one fighter in the world.

Tennessee-native Plant has had to overcome his own personal setbacks, fighting in the memory of his baby daughter who tragically died in 2015 and his mother who was shot dead by police four years later.

Both men know hardship, as their own testing career paths now cross and culminate in a historic undisputed battle under the bright lights of Las Vegas this weekend. But only one man can claim the desired distinction of top dog in the division, as they prepare for a fight fuelled by pride, bad blood and legacy.

At the peak of his powers, unified WBC, WBA and WBO champion Canelo has become accustomed to a certain level of respect and fear from his most-recent opponents - before ultimately proving his superiority in the ring. IBF title holder Plant has shown neither, instead bringing out a previously unseen side of the Mexican in a fiery lead-up to their clash.

Refusing to just be another stepping stone on the pound-for-pound number one’s quest towards widely-expected undisputed success, Plant has perhaps gained a mental advantage past beaten foes could not grasp. All the ingredients are there for what should be an intriguing spectacle in Sin City.
